There are a lot of hosting companies online. Hundreds, if not thousands of them. Some are really good and easy to use and some are really not so easy at all. Some have great customer service and some just suck raw eggs.

Some are easy to use when you are just starting out online and some have such complicated interfaces and support desk functions that they become almost impossible to use in a way that helps your business.

Hosting is what is commonly called a “commodity item”. that means there are a ton of hosts available for you to choose from and many of them compete on price. This is not necessarily a bad thing. I am all for saving money when I can on things that are good. I do not buy things I think are crappy because they are cheap, and I strongly suggest that you do not do that either.

And when you are running your own business, I suggest that you do the same thing.

Here are some reasons why I like Hostgator for my hosting:

  • Their uptime is excellent. I actually have never known my sites to be down.
  • Support is great. Fast and accurate. I have had hosts where it was not way. No Fun.
  • Hostgator is well known. That means that many developers write so that their code works with Hostgator.
  • CPanel rocks. That is the interface you use to set up your domain. I am not a techie, and it does not take much to get up and running with CPanel
  • Fantastico. This installs WordPress blogs with just a couple of clicks. Fast and easy.
  • Easy upgrades. if your business really takes off, you need to be able to ramp up your hosting fast and easy.

Other people may have different opinions, and for sure this is mine. but it is based on my experience with this company. And I really like how they help me spend my time running my business instead of monkeying around with stuff I don’t know much about.

Are there some downsides, sure pretty much like anything else.

  • You need to be in charge of your site. If you have no technical knowledge at all. It would be good to learn so you can watch out for yourself.
  • You have to watch your bandwidth. When your site starts getting a lot of traffic and visitors, you will need to upgrade from their basic package.
  • You need to set up sub domains if you are going to have more than one site. Not a big thing, just something you have to learn and while I recommend starting out with one site, I also recommend you start up your second site as soon as is possible.

Altogether, I give Hostgator a big thumbs up based on my experience with them. If you decide to go with them for your hosting, I think you will have made a great choice.
