You don’t need me to tell you that starting a profitable business online is not as easy as they always make out. First you have to pick the right product to promote, then you have to create websites, then you have to work out how to get traffic… the list goes on and on.

One of the hardest things however, is trying to work out what type of business you want to run.

  • Do you want to spend all your time promoting other people’s products?
  • Do you want to trade your time for money and be a freelancer?
  • Do you want to create tons of websites and sell advertising space?
  • Or do you want to be in control by owning your own products?

Personally, I’ve tried a bunch of different things to make a living online. Most just kind of boil down to being able to sell something in enough volume to make a decent amount of money at it. I work in a number of markets outside of IM and those have been pretty good to me. It’s interesting, though, that the basics of marketing I learned in IM hold true in a lot of other markets online.

Some ways will pretty much wear you out and keep you on the run. CPA marketing comes to mind, especially that kind of crap where you are trying to trick people into clicking on your link or doing one of those page lock scripts. Those kind of things make me tired just thinking about them.

But there’s one idea that I like that I have implemented in a number of different markets and which has been very good to me.

Which one?

Without doubt, it is being in control and owning your own products.

Why? Because when you own your own products, you make more money from each sale. You also have the unique advantage of being able to attract affiliates, do JV’s, or just sell the business off if you want to!

I do still enjoy affiliate marketing and I especially like it when i find great programs that actually work for the people who buy them. The truth is, however, that affiliate marketing takes just as much work (if not more) to make good money as owning your own products does. Now I don’t mind working hard. Never have. I’ve had a lot of different jobs in my life and I have worked hard to the best of my ability at all of them.

Affiliate Marketing Problems

The problem with affiliate marketing, is that you’re not secure. You don’t know how long that product will be available online for, and all of your hard work can be flushed away if the product owner suddenly decides to jump ship! Just recently I stopped getting my commission statement from one affiliate company that I have been getting regular deposits from and come to find out that the owner had simply decided to stop selling the product. And there was nothing I could do about it.

The other problem with affiliate marketing, is that you will always have a hard time separating yourself from the competition. Like if you are doing PPC ads and and you are on the same page with a bunch of other affiliates, what do you do? And that’s providing the network lets you run PPC ads for affiliate products without kicking you off the network.

And ultimately, why bother only taking 50% commissions, when you could have your own similar products taking 100%?

I have done quite a bit of building websites and ranking in Google for some free traffic. I make money by selling advertising space (Adsense). Actually, this works really well for me and puts a nice chunk of change into my bank account every month. Kind of like walking around money. I sure would not want to base my entire income on that model, however. I didn’t have a problem with Panda, but the thing with the search engines is that you never know when they are going to change the rules and make something wrong that used to be OK to do.

When all is said and done, however, it is creating and selling your own products that helps you make the most amount of money over and over again.

Some people will tell you that this is a hard thing to do.

As a matter of fact, you have probably heard people say this a lot, and there is a reason why they say that – because it’s true!

Sadly, the reason why most people never take this route is because they don’t know where to start, and have to continually buy several products as they progress through each step of the process. What You Really Need Instead

What you really need, is an all in one system to take you through the whole process. At least, that’s what I was looking for when I started my info product business.
